St. Vincent Health

Looking toward the future, St. Vincent General Hospital District has embraced the concept of a health campus where specialists, primary care, Lake County Public Health Agency, and other health-related offices reside in the old hospital building and synergistically complement services in the adjacent, new hospital facility.

Barry Sandler, DO

Board Certified Emergency Physician

Dr. Barry Sandler is a board-certified emergency medicine osteopath, who comes to St. Vincent from CarePoint Health. He earned his bachelor’s in psychology from Michigan State University, then medical school at the university’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Sandler completed a four-year residency in emergency medicine at Botsford General Hospital, a busy Level 1 Trauma Center in Detroit.

Dr. Sandler explains that osteopathic medicine (DO) is very similar to allopathic medicine (MD), but osteopaths receive extra training in musculoskeletal medicine, which advocates for a holistic and bio-psycho-social approach to patient care. With his comprehensive osteopathic training and experience, he brings a unique perspective to emergency medical work, which is clearly his calling.

“Caring for people in their most difficult time is rewarding and I’m honored to be able to help patients when they’re suffering most,” says Dr. Sandler. “It may sound odd, but time seems to slow down when I’m taking care of a patient in an emergency situation, and the care becomes very straightforward and almost easy.”

Once Dr. Sander and his wife, a psychiatrist, moved to Colorado, they vowed never to leave. As a CarePoint provider, Dr. Sandler has been practicing for more than two decades in Denver ERs and St. Vincent Health.

What does he enjoy most about his work at St. Vincent Health? “It’s great to have the time to sit down and get to know my patients, a luxury we don’t always have at other emergency departments,” he says. “I like to talk about non-medical things with them to get their mind off of the ER. I also think laughter is the best medicine, and you’ll usually find me joking around with patients and staff.”

When Dr. Sandler isn’t in the ER, he’s likely on his snowboard, Nordic skis, mountain bike or on the trail—running or off-road motorcycling. He and his wife and two teens love to explore Colorado’s lost mining towns.
